In the heart of rural Provence, its spectacular countryside, its fascinating perched hilltop villages, and its amazing landscapes of lavender fields, orchards, and olive groves characterize the region of Luberon. The UNESCO-listed Natural Regional Park of the Luberon is a 120,000 hectare nature reserve, which encompasses rugged limestone mountains, gently rolling hills, lush woodlands, and verdant valleys.
In this itinerary visitors will enjoy an aromatic, scented and breath-taking journey in the heart of Provence, discovering herbs of Provence and the relaxing and healthy lifestyle of the South of France.
Day by Day
With this 3-day itinerary you will enter the heart of the Luberon, a colorful massif in central Provence. The itinerary starts from Lourmarin, one of the most beautiful villages in France, and continues touching other small towns such as Menerbes, Coustellet and Gordes, passes through the famous Abbey of Senanques, surrounded in the blossoming season by purple lavender fields, and ends in the splendid scenery of the Colorado Provencal.
DAY 1
Visit of Lourmarin
Listed as one of France most beautiful villages, Lourmarin offers a taste of the Provencal “art de vivre”. Situated at the foot of the Luberon Mountains, Lourmarin is sheltered from the Mistral winds and enjoys pleasant, sunny days. The village is filled with outdoor cafés, restaurants, artisan boutiques and art galleries.

Gerbaud Aromatic Plants Farm
Situated in Lourmarin, here you can enyoj an aromatic guided tour in a typical farm of the Luberon. For an hour and a half, on a walk of about 1 km between hill and fields, visitors will get to know all about these "little Provence herbs" so simple and so rich in traditions.

Lauris Garden of dye Plants
The garden is located on the terraces of the Lauris Castle with a breath-taking view of the Durance. The Botanical Garden is entirely dedicated to dyeing plants. It is Unique in Europe. The beautiful terraced gardens of the Château de Lauris boast fountains and ponds dating back to the 18th Century. Visitors are able to discover over 300 plants traditionally used for making paint, inks and dyes for use with textiles. The visit takes approximately one hour. During the summer season, the garden is open to the public for guided visits and activities on the theme of plant dyes, for both children and adults. A resource centre displays the use of plants in colour both past and present.

La Citadelle – Botanic Garden – Menerbes
Perched on the heights of La Citadelle wine estate, the botanical garden was created on six 18th-century terraces, restored and furnished to accommodate a wide variety of medicinal, aromatic, edible wild and even magical plants.
The tour takes approximately 1h30, through magnificent views of the village of Ménerbes, the Monts de Vaucluse and the Ventoux.

The Museum of Lavender
Located in Coustellet in the heart of the Luberon, the lavender museum is dedicated to True Lavender, from the harvest through its distillation to its use in Pharmacy products and perfumes. The founder is himself a distiller and cultivator of lavender, a family tradition passed for more 5 generations. Over the course of the last twenty years, he has gathered a magnificent collection of stills from the 16th century to today. The museum is an extension of the family-run farm, housed in a traditional “Provencal Mas” and welcome more than 50,000 visitors for a lively and entertaining tour.

Visit of the village of Gordes: 3 Km from Senanque Abbey
One of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Provence, characterised by its winding streets, cobblestone paths, and stunning views, that have attracted very famous artists including Marc Chagall and Victor Vasarely. Visitors can take a beautiful scenic trek from Senanque Abbey to the village of Gordes which takes about 45 minutes walk.

Distillery Aroma Plants
Aroma Plantes is a family farm, specialized in the production of aromatic and medicinal plants, in an organic way since 1978. Situated at 800 meters level, on the slopes of the Mont Ventoux, in a place where Lavender is queen, the exploitation of 80 hectares, is a family inheritance that respects ancestral cultivation of plants and traditions of the region.

Valsaintes Abbey garden
At 600m high in the heart of the Cisterian Abbey of Valsaintes where monks lived from the 12th century until the French Revolution, the garden is a beautiful heaven where 550 varieties of roses can be found. The best time to visit is between end of May and mid June.

Colorado Provencal – Rustrel
This exceptional site, named for the variety of its shapes and colors, makes it an activity not to miss when visiting the Luberon, combining the pleasure of hiking with the discovery of industrial heritage. This multi-coloured site was shaped by the hand of man, at the time of the exploitation of the ochre quarries, they were also modified by the work of erosion. The old hilltop ochre yards stretched for about 4 km. The current site covers more than 100 hectares.

Visit of the village of Lacoste and its Castle
About 20 km from Lourmarin between Bonnieux and Gordes. Lacoste is a typically Provencal village, located on a green hill. Its position offers from the castle, a superb view of the Bonnieux plain, Mont Ventoux and The Alps.
The village is a place steeped in history and its heritage inspires many local artists and visitors. The castle, which once belonged to the Marquis de Sade, is now owned by the fashion designer and entrepreneur, Pierre Cardin.
L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
Not to miss when visiting the region, famous all over the world for its antique shops and art galleries. Over the past thirty years, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue has become the capital city of antiques, thanks to the settlement of nearly 300 permanent antique dealers and second-hand shops in town. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is also a charming little town and a picturesque riverside spot. Visitors will enjoy a large variety of shops and restaurants.

The ochre trail – Roussillon
Ochre is a natural pigment mixed with cliff sands. Iron oxide colors it from yellow to purplish. Prehistoric artists who adorned the caves with their works knew already the colouring power of ochre. It is at the end of the nineteenth century that the golden age of ochre pigment occurred with the conquest of the American and Russian markets. In 1890, 20.000 tonnes of ochre were sold and twice the number in 1930.
This mineral landscape has been shaped by human hands and by erosion.

Visit of Apt and “Maison du fruits confit” (House of candied fruit)
Apt is not only a beautiful Provencal village but also the World Capital of Candied Fruits. Visitors will enjoy a tour of the village and a tour at the House of candied Fruits.
